THE MARK ON BOTH THE CUP AND SAUCER IS BAWO & DOTTER, MARK 12, AN OVERGLAZE DECORATING MARK IN BLACK AND BROWN. THE WORDS “GUERIN POUYAT ELITE LTD.” PRINTED INSIDE AN ORNATE EMBLEM


ALSO VISIBLE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SAUCER IS: “ELITE” AND “S M” OVER BEARDED MAN ON A SHIELD. “LIMOGES” ABOVE AND “ FRANCE” UNDERNEATH THIS ICON, IN GREEN.

Bawo & Dotter was a New York City china importer of largely Limoges porcelain established in the 1860’s. In the early 1870’s it set up a decorating studio in Limoges, France called The Elite Works. After World War I, ca 1920, it purchased the William Guerin firm and did business under

the name here, Guerin Pouyat Elite Ltd.


According to Gaston, Collector’s Guide to Limoges, 2nd ed., this mark is not often seen.


The bearded man on the shield is St Martial, taken from the seal of the city of Limoges, France.
