THREE MARKS ON BACK OF PLATE:
UNDERGLAZE WHITE WARE MARK IN GREEN: “J.P./L WITH “FRANCE” UNDERNEATH, CA. 1891-1932.
MARK: “J. POUYAT LIMOGES” IN WREATH. THIS IS AN OVERGLAZE DECORATING MARK CA. AFTER 1914-1932
MARK: “W” IN WREATH, AN OVERGLAZE IMPORTING MARK, CA. EARLY 1900’S. This is a store mark which indicates this plate was made to order for that particular store (Wanamaker’s), and not for general distribution. Wanamaker’s is in Philadelphia, and is still there, opposite the baroque structure which is Philadelphia City Hall.
Because of the conjunction of the Pouyat marks with the Wanamaker’s mark (early 1900’s), I would characterize these plates as antique, which I use to refer to items a century old.
