This vintage ceramic wall vase in the form of a cicada came from Provence, an area in the south of France long known for its pottery and the bold, vivacious tones of its decorative glazes. Also, for its prevalence of cicadas, which have come to symbolize good luck and happiness. It dates from the latter part of the 20th century.
It is 8 1/4 inches long, 3 3/4 inches wide and 3 inches high. It weighs 1 lb 2 oz.
The mouth is pierced permitting a loop of wire for hanging on a wall, and is suitable for holding small dried flowers or fragrant herbs. Both the form of the cicada and its colors lend themselves to a frivolous, off-beat tone.
The head is black with a band of orange, and orange eyes, as shown. The wings are outlined in dark brown, a darker brownish beige in front shading to a lighter tone towards the real, the tips of the folded wings.
These pieces are hand painted and hand glazed.
Its condition is very good, with minimal to normal wear for its age. There are no cracks, chips or flakes.
